a folded estate map that, when consulted, causes planted trees to rearrange into its depicted order by the next dawn.
The sheet is a hand-coloured plan of an orchard and adjoining kitchen garden, with rows numbered and varieties indicated in a consistent hand. The ink shows ordinary corrosion for its type. The plan does not correspond to any known estate survey under the Wrentham name. When the plan is carried through an existing orchard and opened within it, the arrangement of trees changes by the next dawn to match the plan’s geometry, including spacing, row curvature, and the placement of apparent gaps. The moved trees display no tearing of roots and no disturbance of soil. Stakes and trellises remain in their original positions unless also drawn on the plan. Trees not depicted on the plan are absent after rearrangement and are later found standing at the orchard perimeter in a single line. Attempts to provoke partial rearrangement by covering sections of the plan have failed. Marking additional trees on the plan produces additional trees of matching age and cultivar, bearing tags in the same ink as the original legend.
